Department of Visual Communication is one of the prestigious departments of the college. It was established in 2010 with just one faculty member and 15 students. There are presently 5 faculty members and 15 visiting faculty members and 79 students.
The department was established to cater to the fast growing need for media professionals. The department strives to provide a holistic media education that incorporates technology, aesthetics and integrated use of various media. Apart from the degree, certificate courses in related areas are offered. The department offers 8 add on courses to cater its own students as media professionals, 8 value added courses to other department students 4 university certificate (IECD) courses and it encourages 8 Swayam Courses each Year.
Students are given daily assignment through systematized work sheets and library work, so that they can make the best use of their time in the college and leave the same as real professionals.
The department has various 9 Clubs/Associations to bring out and to develop the innate talents and skills of the students. The Drama club has recently stages a drama with social and political relevance, while The film club arranges Film Festival on each year. The Literary club has constituted an award to honour people for their literary and social contribution.
There are 12 special events and programmes specially arranged in order to socialize the students in the field of media and communication. There will be minimum of 6 workshops, 20 invited talks, 15 guest lectures, 2 inter changes programmes with other college and universities in each academic year.
It has established 7 Endowment Awards for its students who excel in academics, exhibit professionalism and contribute to society. The department has partnered with reputed 16 Media houses through MOU's for the internship of the students in the final year of their course.
We have our own department library Che Guevara Library in which we have books, related to media contents. The library is the contribution of alumni and present students on their birthdays, farewell days and important occasions.
The department has brought out some musical / visual projects by utilizing its own sources on various themes, written, composed, sung, acted choreographed and directed by the students themselves. The department has taken a novel step of adopting villages ( Extension Activities - V care) to conscientise people on social and political issues through various media, including folk arts, also, to disseminate messages of social reformers and progressive thinkers.
B.Sc Visual Communication
Course offered training and placement assistant to the students in the following area:
Film Industry: Directors, Cinematographers, Art directors, Set designers, Directors, Script writers, Sound Engineers.
Advertising Agencies: Concept creator, Graphic Designer, Copy Writers, Art/Design
News production : Editors, Journalist, Proof readers, Photojournalist in Newspapers and Magazines.
TV : Video/ Audio Editor, Program producer, VJ, RJ, Art/Design Director, News reporters, Anchors, News readers, News producers, Camera man and light man.
The department has state-of-art facilities to provide hands-on training to the students in the various areas of visual media.
The Studio is equipped with the latest recording equipments and software, like Logic Pro, the digital audio workstation software application, iMac, all-in-one desktop computers, Steinberg Audio Interface/card, Yamaha HS5 45 Watt Powered Studio Monitor (speaker), AKG Mike. The Studio is acoustically treated. Dubbing and songs recording are done in the Studio qualities of which equal the dubbing and songs recording in films.
The total area of the studio is 25” x25”. It is a Green Matte theatre and acoustically treated. The theatre has the latest still digital cameras and video cameras. It has provision to manage light and shadow, like light cutters/flags, reflectors and extra lighting options. The latest Final Cut Pro software is used with iMac desktop computers to edit videos. The Studio has all the necessary accessories, like umbrellas, trolleys etc. for shooting videos and films. The dubbing and songs recordings done in the theatre are equal in quality to that of filmmaking. It is fully air-conditioned.
The Studio has computers installed with video and audio editing software and high end graphic card. Provision for dubbing is also available in the Studio. Computers are available to the students at the ratio of 1:1 for learning and practicing video and film editing.
The Hall is used for the practice of drama, folk dances, department meetings, guest lectures, seminars, literary club, screening films for film appreciation and criticism. The hall is equipped with an excellent audio-visual system.
A well-stacked library is in the department with a significant collection of books on mediato cater to the needs of both the faculty and the students. Story reading is encouraged to make the students highly prolific later on in field.
We conducted an international seminar on Tamil cinema in its centenary year from 03.12.2018 to 07.12.2018. And we had five days film festival. Mr. Ko. Balasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Director Vetrimaran, and Director films Pollathavan, Adukalam and Visaranai, Director Suresh Sangaiya Director of the film Kidayin Karunai Manu, Thirumurugan, Mr. Thangam, Associate Director Balamurali Varman, Honorable Minister Ku. Parasuraman Member of Parliament, Writer Imayam and auto Chandra Kumar, writer of Visaranai and Chinnaponnu, Playback folk singer.
Another one international conference was conducted in 2019 along with Revolt Movement. Personalities such as Dr. Shalini, Writer Pamaran and eminent speakers attended the conference.
Workshop on Folklore (I semester) Folklore is the expression body of culture shared by a particular group of people. To keep grow the Tamil Culture among the Students the traditional folklore training is given to the first years. At the end of the training Stage Performance is being arranged for them to express their talents.
Workshop on Theatre (II Semester) To keep grow the Tamil Culture among the Students the traditional theatre art is being taught for the second years.At the end of the training Stage Performance is being arranged for them to exhibit their talents.
Workshop on Advanced Photography (III Semester)workshop on advanced photography is being offered for the Second years to develop their photographical skills. At the end of the workshop Students are taken as tour to take photos in a particular place. Then their photos are exposed at the Photography Exhibition conducted by our Department in the College. For the programs of our college our students are sent to take Photos of the events.
Workshop on Videography (IVSemester) workshop on Videography is offered for the Second year students to develop their Videography skills. At the end of the workshop students are given a chance to shoot a video to practice their learnings. For the special events of our college our students are given chance to shoot the event.
Workshop on E-Journalism (IVSemester) workshop on E-Journalism is offered for the Second year students to develop their writing skills even in the field of Online Journalism. At the end of the workshop students are given a chance to create their own blogs and Journals in online forum.
Workshop on Editing (V Semester) Workshop on Editing is offered for the Third-year students to develop their Editing skills. At the end of the workshop students are given a chance to Edit a clip to practice their learnings. For the special events of our college our students are given chance to edit the footages.
Workshop on Sound Engineering (VI Semester) Workshop on Sound Engineering is offered for the Third-year students to develop their Editing skills. At the end of the workshop students are given a chance to Edit a clip to practice and to exhibit their learnings.
